Undergraduate Students Majoring in Archives of our School Visited Wuhan Archives

In order to thoroughly study and understand the basic ideas and requirements of strategic transformation of archival informatization, and help students majoring in Archives to enhance their professional cognition and improve the quality of personnel training. On April 14, Ping Wang, Associate Dean of our School and head of the Department of Archives and Government Information Studies, led a team of 34 2021-grade undergraduates majoring in Archives to carry out professional cognitive practice activities in Wuhan Archives.

Students first walked into the Digitalization Processing Center of Wuhan Archives to learn about the whole process of converting precious historical files into digital files, such as retrieval, recording, scanning, processing, quality inspection, return and backup. Students showed great interest in the digital processing, and some students tried to practice under the guidance of professionals. Students have said that although the process of digital processing was complicated and boring, the craftsmanship and professionalism of the staff were moving and admirable.

Next, students visited the Data Center Computer Room of Wuhan Archives and the Intelligent Comprehensive Security Management Platform of Wuhan Archives. Students learned that under the background of accelerating digitalization transformation, Wuhan Archives has basically realized the deep integration of information technology and archival work through visiting, and has a high level in digital archives management.

The Intelligent Comprehensive Security Management Platform covers all aspects of the management of the entire Wuhan Archives, which can not only control remotely, manage, sterilize and dehumidify the archives in the storeroom, but also manage the staff of the comprehensive management archives effectively. Students have deepened their understanding of the course of information system analysis and design they are studying, and also stimulated the inspiration of ongoing experimental course of information system design through the understanding of this platform.

The students also visited the Intelligent Archives Storeroom. The visiting of the Intelligent Archives Storeroom has updated the students' understanding of the hand-held file rack in the traditional storeroom, and made them deeply realize the great development opportunity brought by the new technology to the transformation of archives informationization. Wuhan Archives has built the storeroom into a full automatic mode. The movement and locking of the file rack, and the temperature and humidity in the storeroom can be controlled via the touch screen on the file rack. In the archives storeroom of the Republic of China, the students were attracted by the ancient and obsolete archives of the Republic of China. The yellow-tinted paper and the traditional Chinese characters diluted by time made the students think a lot. Everyone had in-depth exchanges with the staff, throwing out long-standing questions and unwilling to leave.

Under the guidance of the commentator, the students also visited Heroic Warfare -- Special Exhibition of Wuhan Defence War against COVID-19. Everyone listened to the touching heroic deeds of fighting the epidemic, and saw various forms of archives -- more than 380 photos, more than 280 objects, and 29 multimedia devices ... These archives profoundly interpreted the great anti-epidemic spirit of putting life first, being united with the whole country, risking one's life, respecting science and sharing a common destiny, and truly and vividly restored the course of the Party and the state leading the people of the whole country to win a major decisive victory in epidemic prevention and control.

In this professional cognitive activity, the 2021-grade undergraduate students of Archives stepped out of campus and practiced personally. Through visiting, studying and communicating, they deepened the understanding of archival informatization construction, deeply felt the great potential of deep integration of information technology and archival work, further understood their professional advantages and strengthened their self-confidence.
